My meeting with Imre Makovecz was, in fact, a "coincidence". I did not know his work. In Belgium and the neighbouring countries I had been looking for an architect who thought about architecture in the way I then only sensed — but I found no such architect.

I came to Hungary in 1990, and when I encountered Imre Makovecz's work, it felt much like designing my diploma project. For years I had to live in very difficult circumstances, without knowing Hungarian and without family or friends around me. In the most literal sense, it was always architecture that kept me alive. What I sensed about architecture at the age of 21 is present in Imre Makovecz's architecture: it lives, it exists, it has been realised in the world. Architecturally, Hungary today is in a different situation from Makovecz's time, but my striving has remained the same. There are very few of us in the world today who think about architecture this way, but to quote Imre Makovecz: "These are not failures, these are achievements!" And how right he still is today!

I find it important that people can get to know Imre Makovecz's buildings more deeply — their stories and their surroundings — that they can experience the spaces of his buildings and their special light, and that we can talk in person about him, his personality, his thoughts and his life. That is why I started guided walks to Imre's buildings. These walks are not only for architects but for everyone who is sensitive to their own surroundings, who seeks the relationship between environment and space, and the possible manifestations of 'outside' and 'inside'.
